Nearly two weeks after Tunisia issued an international arrest warrant against Suha Arafat, the widow of the former Palestinian head of state and head of the Liberation Organization, President Mahmoud Abbas has affirmed that he completely trusts the independence of Tunisian judiciary system.
President Abbas is in Tunis, on a diplomatic visit meeting Tunisia’s post-revolution leadership. He has declared that the Palestinians have no intention to intervene in the affairs of other Arab states.
In a recent press conference on November 11th, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas expressed that the Palestinian administration is willing to cooperate with other Arab governments regardless of the governments in charge- Islamic or secular. Abbas called the Arab revolutions “internal affairs” that should remain within the hands of the people.
Abbas met current governmental officials including interim Prime Minister Beji Caid Essebsi and the caretaker President Foued Mebazzaa. He also met with leaders of political parties from across the spectrum such as Ennahda and Ettakatol founders Rached Ghannouchi and Mustafa Ben Jaafar. He met with Jounaidi Abdeljawed, spokesperson of the secular party Modernist Democratic Pole. Abbas met other national prominent figures such as the President of the Higher Commission for Political Reforms, Iyadh Ben Achour and the National Commission of Investigating Corruption and Wrongdoings, Abdelfatah Amor.
Tunisia has been supportive of the Palestinian cause since it’s independence in 1956. It hosted the Palestine Liberation Organization headquarters in Tunis from 1982 to 1994.
Abbas was visiting with a special delegation of the Palestinian leadership composed of Saeb Erekat, former chief negotiator of the Palestinian authority, Bassem Salhi, a member of the executive bureau of OLP and Majdi Khaladi, diplomatic adviser of Mahmoud Abbas.
